What can you do to help get teens excited to go back to school? Help collect fun decorations for their school lockers!
The gray metal locker is a blank slate; it’s also the first impression your teen presents to his or her new school and friends. Here are some fun decorating ideas. Lockers for BoysMost boys prefer a plain locker, but if your son wants to decorate his locker, choose a theme that is something he’s into. If he plays soccer, collect magazine pictures of his favorite players, a soccer magnet, a photo of his team (backed with magnetic tape). If you're feeling extra creative, you could get the measurements of the locker from the school, purchase a piece of soccer fabric, cover a piece of corkboard, and make him a thumbtack board on which to add items (photos, sports tickets, a drawing by a friend) throughout the school year. Fun Lockers for GirlsMost girls are thrilled at the prospect of having a well-decorated school locker. In the age of “Trading Spaces” and other TV remodeling shows, girls want to have the cutest locker and are often competitive about it! First, choose a color theme. Then visit the fabric store and craft store and collect cute fabric to cover a cork board or even completely cover the inside of the locker. Wrapping paper works well for this- or consider plain brown paper (from the post office) for a great background on which to add dazzles of color. The sky’s the limit- you could add a whole locker full of cute pink round stickers, fabric flowers, ‘flair’ pins, photo stickers of friends, or cuttings from magazines spelling out cute sayings. Scrapbooking supplies at the craft store are perfect for decorating lockers- be sure she’s with you to pick out her favorites! Accessorize That Locker!Magnetic pencil holders, brush and mirror sets, a dry-erase board so friends can write messages (or even a chalkboard!), magnetic hooks, and a shelf for storage are some of the accessories that will make locker life more fun. Small, square wire multi-tiered storage boxes can be found in stores like Kmart and Walmart and, as long as they are a small size, work great to help your teen organize books, backpacks etc in their lockers. A few stores have really great collections of locker decorations. Check Staples office supply store, Bed Bath & Beyond, Target, Pottery Barn Teens, Delia’s, Claire’s, Limited Too- many of these stores also have locker decorations available online. Most of all- lockers should be lots of fun- so have fun decorating! Read about: Getting Teens Ready for Back to School Celebrating Your Teen’s Birthday
