Investigating Teenagers' Activities

Private Investigations Involving Teens Growing Field

Mar 6, 2009 Max Sherry

Parents are utilizing private investigators and other devices to monitor their teenager's daily activities especially after school.

When hiring a private investigator to monitor their teenager's activities, many parents simply want the peace of mind to know that their son or daughter is really at his or her friend's house after school. Others suspect gang involvement, drug use, or any array of pitfalls that could harm their child for a lifetime. Perhaps a parent is worried that his or her child is falling in with the wrong crowd. Moreover, some teens may have stopped communicating altogether with their parents.

Whatever the case may be, a strong market is emerging for private investigators in investigating teenagers' activities as teens are becoming more adept at hiding information from adults through technology.

Private Investigations to Track Teens

Private investigators are able to monitor a child's location by placing magnetized GPS devices on a teenager's car. This may be necessary if a teen states that he or she is visiting a friend a few miles away but the odometer reads a much higher mileage number on a consistent basis. Obviously, the teenager is not going where he or she has intended for the parent to know.

By running a computerized program that traces the location of the teen, a parent can find out exactly where a teenager is and has been. When more miles are on the car than should be, there may be concern that the child is dabbling in activities such as drug-dealing, drug-running, or simply doing drugs.

While this is not always the case, especially if the teen is heavily involved in after-school activities, it should be considered. Many children have been saved from an unfortunate life due to GPS devices.

Furthermore, parents have more control over the family car or the car that the child is driving, if it is owned by the parents.

Investigating Teenagers

Computerized Stealth programs are installed onto their child's computer and monitor E-mails, keystrokes, sites logged onto, instant messages (IM's), etc. Even computer-savvy teens are unaware that the program is installed. Many parents have found the information to be insightful into their child's activities and some have even been able to stop meetings with sexual predators and other potentially harmful people.

Teenagers' Cell Phones

If a cell phone is in the parent's name, a private investigator is able to trace phone calls through the cell phone history log. If many suspicious calls are made to a particular phone number, surveillance can be done on the location of the outbound call.

While cell phone records and GPS devices are useful in tracking teenagers' activities, there are privacy laws and legal limitations that need to be considered on a case-by-case basis. It is much easier to track a teenager's cell phone log if he or she is under eighteen years old and the phone is registered to a parent. If the child is over eighteen but the phone is registered to the parent, the adult still has some access to those pertinent records.

In conclusion, private investigators can help parents monitor their teenager's activities by utilizing GPS devices, computerized stealth programs, and browsing cell phone logs.

Thank you for this article. As the father of two girls, and the father of one son, who was murdered in 2006, I believe that this type of information as well as the use of private investigators and technology parents no longer have to take a back seat to an unruly child. God Bless,
