Turn a Hit TV Show Into a Birthday Bash

Teen girls looking for birthday party ideas don't need to look any farther than the TV screen. With a little creativity, this party idea is sure to take the spotlight.

The popular television show "Project Runway" on Bravo TV has it all: fashion design, aspiring designers, models, and host Heidi Klum. Now, girls can take clues from the show and host a birthday party that's sure to be a hit among their friends.

The Idea for the Party

"Project Runway" pits fashion designers against each other in a series of weekly challenges. Every week one of the contestants is eliminated until there are only two left. The finalists go head to head in a runway fashion show featuring their own collections. The winner receives numerous prizes, including money to help launch his or her own clothing line.

This idea can be brought down to a much smaller scale for a birthday party. Instead of multiple weeks and challenges, party "contestants" get two hours and one challenge. Their challenge is to put together one "designer" fashion using only the contents of a paper grocery bag.

What to Put in the Designers' Bags

The fun in the competition is to provide random items for the guests to use for their designs. Some ideas for the bags include:

Colorful duct tape
Buttons
Ribbon and lace
Crepe paper
Tissue paper (different colors)
Plastic garbage bag
Safety pins

The paper grocery bag can also be used in the final product. Don't forget to include hot glue guns, scissors, and tape. The bags will need to be set up ahead of time.

Setting up the Challenge

Depending on the number of girls at the party, they will need to be divided into teams of three to four girls each. Each team of "designers" will receive a bag of materials for the challenge. After hearing the rules, the teams will proceed to separate areas to work on their clothes.

The Rules of the Challenge

Once teams have been selected and work rooms established, it's time to hear the rules.

Each team will receive a bag of pre-selected materials.
Only the materials in the bag can be used.
Teams will need to select one of their members as their model and design an outfit for her.
When the signal is given, the girls will have two hours to complete the challenge.
Hair and makeup will also have to be done in the time given.

The Runway Fashion Show

Prior to the competition, a "runway" should be set up for the grand finale. One idea is to tape off an area in the living room or den with brightly colored duct tape. When time is up, the teams and their models will report to the runway. One at a time the models will show off their designs. Fun and lively music should be played to add to the mood.

Once all the models are done, have them all report back to the runway for judging. If there are other adults at the party, have them do the judging. Otherwise, the girls can vote by secret ballot. The team with the most points wins. For prizes, find some inexpensive fashion necklaces at the party store.

Girls will have fun creating and then modeling their own fashions. A Project Runway birthday party is a fun way for any teenage girl to celebrate her special day with friends.
