A prom is an important event in a teen's life. For girls, picking the perfect dress is key. Providing that dress and not breaking the bank may be important to parents.

Finding an affordable prom dress is actually very simple. Dresses that are current as far as style can be found in many places, as long as one knows where to look. And, these dresses don’t have to break the bank either. When in search of an affordable prom dress, consider the following options.

Buy the Dress in Advance

Save money by purchasing a prom dress well in advance or out of season. The good news is that dress styles generally do not change from year to year. Most teens start dress hunting about two months before prom night when retail stores feature them. However, purchasing a dress six months or more in advance could yield the same styles at spectacular savings. For this option, try looking in specialty shops that sell fancy dresses year-round.

Shop the Resale Racks

Gently used prom dresses often cost a fraction of the cost at resale shops. There are dresses that have been worn only once, and are still in great shape. There might even be dresses that were previously owned, but never worn. Find a resale shop that specializes in formal wear for many more prom dresses to choose from.

Shop the Sales Racks

Most formal shops run periodic specials and deals on prom dresses. Buy a dress during a sale and this could definitely save a buyer some money. Some stores will offer sign up for e-mail notifications or mail-outs when there are special deals. Take advantage of this. Make sure to compare prices during sales, as some stores mark up merchandise before putting it on sale.

Look in the Newspaper Classifieds

Many people list prom dresses in the classifieds once they are not needed anymore. Find a previously owned dress at a steep discount simply because someone needs to free up space in a closet. Look in the classifieds in newspapers and also at online classified sites such as Craigslist.

Consider Auction Sites

Look at online auction sites, like eBay, to find a cheap prom dresses. Some dresses are offered as "Buy it Now" pricing, while others can have a bid placed. One should make sure to set the top price willing to be paid for the dress, so as to keep within a budget. Many people get caught up in the excitement of winning and spend more than otherwise intended. Consider the price of shipping for a dress before placing a bid, too. Some auctions will charge more for shipping than the cost of the item.

Talk to Friends and Family

Contact family members and friends who have attended a prom or formal event in the last year or so. Perhaps someone has a dress to pass along, or at least offer at a small price. Make sure the person did not wear the dress to the same school, as it might get recognized. This is a slim chance, but something to consider.

Rent a Prom Dress

If one is not concerned with keeping the dress, try renting it. Many formal shops rent dresses for a small fee. Get clear details on the rules of what happens if a dress is damaged. Some stores require full price if there is a stain or tear to the dress.

There are many ways to save money on a prom dress. The key is to find a modern, in style dress for a cheap price. Keep eyes open and ear peeled to hear how other teen girls are purchasing a dress to get even more ideas.
